Liguria is a coastal region in the north west of Italy, on the border with France. The coastal part on the Mediterranean sea is called the "Italian Riviera". The eastern part of the Riviera is home to the colorful group of old fishing villages called "Cinque Terre", and also to the famous spots of Portofino and Santa Margherita Ligure. The western part of the Riviera is a continuation of France's Côte d'Azur with hilltop towns like Ventimiglia and the flowery port city of Sanremo, home to an Art Nouveau casino, rated the best in all of Italy. The Teatro Ariston in Sanremo is home to the famous annual song contest in Italy which has produced classics like "Nel blu dipinto di blu" or "Volare".
Some of the locations we will be visiting in this region include: The five villages of Cinque Terre, Genoa, Portofino, Porto Venere, Sanremo, and many more.
Flights for this tour will arrive into Nice airport in France, so day trips to cities like Nice and Cannes are expected, along with a stop in Monaco.
There is an old village that was partially destroyed by an earthquake called "Bussana Vecchia" that we will be visiting as well.
Our walk that will take us through the Cinque terre will be beautiful and breathtaking, but also very steep and at times high, so it is not for those who are uncomfortable with such heights.
With some of the best food to offer in all of Italy, Liguria specializes in: tagliatelle, torta di verdure, mushroom pie, mussels with cheese and herbs, Farinata, Orata, Gattafin, and Soviore. Whatever you try, make sure you order something with pesto, because this is the place to get it.
Two white wines to try here are Pigato and Vermentino.
As this is a densely touristic area, we ask to keep aware of pickpockets in most places.
